Key Assessment of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy
Children with CMD differ in their ability to walk but once over the age of three it would be unusual for them to begin walking independently. It is important to assess gait in those that can walk in shoes and bare feet. Those who do not walk should have their floor mobility assessed.
For those who are ambulant you could use the NSAA. For those who are non-ambulant some of the scales which capture arm function may be useful or the EK2 scale. It is important to assess posture in the spine and neck.
You may need to assess leg length, neck range of motion, spinal mobility, rigidity, thoracic rotation and hip and pelvis alignment. Range of motion should be assessed where appropriate. Pain should also be evaluated as spine and neck pain may be posture.
