Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded (HFMSE)
Measurement framework:
Clinician reported outcome. Items on the original HFMS were expanded to capture higher functioning in SMA patients using 13 relevant additional items adapted from the gross motor function measure (GMFM) with their scoring adapted to a three-point scale as in the original HFMS. A higher score indicates a higher level of function. Score between 0 – 66 points. This version includes items that capture kneeling and transition and ability on stairs.

SMA functional sitters and above. Not suitable for non-sitters.

Ambulatory and non-ambulatory.
Clinical application:
It takes between 10 and 25 minutes to complete depending on the ability of the subject.
Training / training material
Training advised to ensure accurate delivery of the scale. Need a mat, bench and maybe a plinth to perform this scale well. A list of this equipment is in the manual. Manual and worksheets are available as well as comprehensive audio guided training slides.
