Brooke Upper Extremity Grade
Measurement framework:
Clinician reported outcome. A 6-point classification designed originally for DMD. Summarises upper limb function with a low score 1 = normal simultaneous abduction of both arms and a score of 6 = no useful hand function. The modified Brooke reverses the scoring and adds an additional level of scoring. See PUL Entry Item SOP.
ICF Domain:
Activity
Suitable for:
Developed for DMD but also used in SMA and other NMD
Level of function:
Ambulatory and non-ambulatory
Clinical application:
Can be a quick method of summarising upper limb function. However, it does have a ceiling effect in strong patients. A modified version of the Brooke is the Entry item in the Performance of Upper Limb Scale.
Training / training material
Requires no training. Can be conducted on a patient reported level as well as being observed by a clinician.
