Gross Motor Function Measure for Cerebral Palsy (GMFM)
Measurement framework:
The original gross motor function measure consists of 88 items with a shortened version consisting of 66 items. All items are scored on a four-point scale. 0 – cannot initiate the task, 1 -partially performs the task, 2 – performs the movement incompletely, or completely but imperfectly, and 3 – performs the task fully and normally. Items belong to one of five dimensions: A- lying and rolling, B- sitting, C- crawling and kneeling, D- standing and E- walking running and jumping.
ICF Domain:
Activity
Suitable for:
Originally designed for use in cerebral palsy but it has been applied in several neuromuscular disorders including Pompe disease.
Level of function:
Ambulatory and non-ambulatory.
Clinical application:
There is a specific user manual. It is rather a lengthy scale and can be very fatiguing in neuromuscular disease however specific modules may be of use to someone already trained in the GMFM wanting to capture some measures of motor performance in a specific domain. However, remember that neuromuscular disorders do not include abnormalities of muscle tone as they do in cerebral palsy so apply with caution.
