Motor Function Measure for Neuromuscular Disease (MFM 32 and 20)

Measurement framework:

The MFM-32 is a generic neuromuscular scale consisting of 32 items (20 items for children 6 or under, where some of the items are less suitable for very young children do not need to be tested). All items are scored on a four-point scale. 0 – cannot initiate the task, 1 – can partially perform the task, 2 – can perform the movement incompletely or imperfectly and 3 – can perform the task fully and normally. Individual item scoring is included in a detailed manual. Items belong to one of three different dimensions: Standing and transfers D1; Axial and proximal mobility D2; Distal motor ability D3.

ICF Domain:

Activity

Suitable for:

All neuromuscular disorders.

Level of function:

Ambulatory and non-ambulatory.

Clinical application:

The MFM is suitable for use in clinics and has been fully validated. As a generic scale for neuromuscular disorders some items may feel less relevant to particular diseases than others. It does capture important motor tasks and includes gross motor tasks as well as distal arm /hand function. It takes approximately 30 to 50 minutes to complete the MFM.

Training / training material

Equipment is specified in the user manual. Some objects must be available such as a tennis ball, coins, CD. Training is required and available. Details HERE
