Revised Hammersmith Scale (RHS)
Measurement framework:
Clinician reported outcome. Disease specific. The RHS was developed to address some of the measurement issues of the HFMSE as identified by Rasch analysis.
It aimed to improve the sensitivity of the scale and to reduce the ceiling effect. It contains similar items to the original HFMSE as well as additional items mainly taken from the NSAA. Other items have been revised or removed.
The scale consists of 36 items with most items scored as: 0 – unable, 1 – able with adaptation or 2 – able. A higher score denotes a higher level of function. It includes a timed rise from the floor test and a 10-metre walk run test and captures developmental milestones as outlined by the World Health Organisation.
ICF Domain:
Activity
Suitable for:
SMA. Children and adults
Level of function:
Ambulatory and non-ambulatory SMA
Clinical application:
The items within the RHS reflect many activities which relate to activities of daily life for children and adults. It includes measurement of right and left slides as this can assist with management not just measurement. For subjects able to sit and do minimal activity in lying on the RHS a useful adjunct to the RHS is the RULM.
Training / training material
Training advised to ensure accurate delivery of the scale. Need a specific kit to conduct this reliably. A list of this kit is in the manual. Manual and worksheets are available as well as comprehensive audio guided training slides.
