Mobility Aids and Wheelchairs

As ambulation becomes more difficult there are several options. The easiest solution is probably the provision of a wheelchair, however it is important to stay active, and when a patient is doing less standing because of provision of a wheelchair it is important to provide equipment and mobility aids to preserve existing muscle strength. When an individual is non-ambulant, but they still have enough strength in their arms, a wheelchair with assisted wheels or e-motion wheels can be useful. This means that arm strength can be better preserved due to regular use.
Any wheelchair must encourage a symmetrical posture and symmetrical movement as asymmetry can cause contracture formation and impact scoliosis. If a patient is non ambulant and does not have enough strength in their arms to propel a wheelchair, then an electric wheelchair can be provided. Ensuring that whenever the joystick is mounted that symmetry is preserved is also important.
Motablility – The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair.
Remap – Charitable organisation that designs and custom-makes equipment to help disabled people live more independent lives
